Samsung might issue a massive recall for the Galaxy Note7

UPDATE: Samsung issues official statement on the Galaxy Note7. More details here.

Samsung has hit a snag over its Galaxy Note7. According to a Korean report, the number 1 smartphone maker could be announcing a recall for all Galaxy Note7 sold in Korea and worldwide in the interest of safety.

This comes right after reports of Galaxy Note7 units catching fire while charging. Potential problems can be nipped in the bud by issuing a recall as soon as possible before releasing more Note7s to the market.

According to an unverified source, the problematic battery account for less than 0.1% of the entire volume and the solution requires a battery swap. It is also mentioned that Samsung has no intention to delay the announcement or to hide the result of their investigation, and a final decision will be made for the maximum consumer benefit.

How this could impact our region isn’t clear at the moment. The Galaxy Note7 was meant to be their fastest flagship rollout in Malaysia with a local release scheduled for 19th August.

About a week before its official availability, Samsung Malaysia had issued a statement of a delay due to supply constraints which pushed the launch to September. However, those who have pre-ordered directly or through their authorised partners had received their devices early as promised. Some early customers had complained of bootloop issues with their Galaxy Note7 and apparently this was also reported in Singapore.

We’ve gotten in touch with a rep from Samsung Malaysia and are still waiting for a response.

UPDATE: Samsung will be making an announcement and it is likely a global recall. The announcement will be made at 5:00PM in South Korea (4:00PM Malaysian Time) by Samsung’s head of Mobile Communication Business. Thanks Bibux for the tip!
