Meet the Meizu Mix, a smartwatch that’s more watch than smart

For a company that’s primarily known for making smartphones and MP3 players, Meizu has taken a bold step into a new segment of the market with their brand new device the Meizu Mix — the company’s first-ever smartwatch.

Only it isn’t exactly a smartwatch.

Well, not in the conventional sense anyway. Usually, when you think of a smartwatch you think of a wearable that has a digital display like the Moto 360 or Apple Watch. The Mix, on the other hand, does not have a digital display. On the surface, it looks exactly like your average mechanical watch.

However, if you look under the hood, things are a little different. Although it doesn’t have a digital display, this watch can push notifications from your smartphone via Meizu’s dedicated app. It utilises an LED light as well as a vibration motor to alert you when you’ve received a new notification. It’ll also do activity tracking.

The Mix is also built really well with a case that’s made of 316L stainless steel with a layer of Sapphire Glass on top to protect the watch face elements. You can even take the Meizu Mix out in the rain because the watch is water resistant up to 30 metres.

Keeping the device going is a 270 mAh battery that Meizu says can last up to 240 days between charges thanks to the fact that it doesn’t have a power-sucking digital display. Connectivity options are fairly limited as the watch only supports Bluetooth 4.0.

Right now the watch is being crowdfunded on Chinese site Taobao with a goal of CNY500,000 (about RM302,000). The watch case itself will come in two colours — black and silver — while users will have a choice of three straps — Denim, Leather and Steel — which is priced at CNY999 (around RM603}, CNY1,299 (around RM784) and CNY1,499 (around RM905).
