Samsung is expected to reveal its next smartwatch, the Gear S3 at IFA 2016 event that’s happening on the first week of September. The current Gear S2 was announced at IFA 2015 at a separate event right after the Galaxy Note5 was announced.
According to Sammobile, the Gear S3 will follow its predecessor with a round watch face and a rotating bezel. It is likely to run on the same TizenOS and it should be compatible with other non-Samsung Android devices.
The Korean smartphone maker has also filed a trademark for “Gear S3 Frontier”, which is likely to be one of the various models being offered. The current Gear S2 was initially launched with a sporty looking Gear S2 and a contemporary-looking Gear S2 Classic. Later on, they had also introduced an 18K Rose Gold and Platinum options, as well as a blinged up version with black diamonds.
The Apple Watch is currently number 1 for smartwatches commanding a 47% market share according to IDC’s latest numbers. Apple has yet to reveal its next watch and we’ll see if Samsung could overtake the Apple in the final quarter.
The Galaxy Note7 event is happening next Tuesday and they might just show a sneak peek of the Gear S3 like last year. We’ll be in New York next week, so stay tuned for the latest updates.
