Is this confirmation that the Samsung Galaxy Note7 will have an iris scanner?

Rumours have been floating around about the Samsung Galaxy Note7 sporting a different kind of biometric security, specifically an iris scanner. Now, thanks to a leaked video of Note7 in action, it looks like those rumours may just be true.

Based on the video, the iris scanning looks pretty snappy and quick to unlock, perhaps even snappier than the Galaxy S7 edge’s fingerprint scanner. But, if the video is to be believed, there are several steps one has to take before being able to unlock their smartphone. You will have to wake the screen, swipe up and then let the phone scan your iris before it unlocks. With a fingerprint scanner you just need to hit the scanner once and your phone is unlocked.

Alternatively, if we look at something similar like Windows Hello on the Lumia 950 XL, all the user needs to do is wake the screen before it starts “looking” for you.

Besides the video, there are also a bunch of screenshots of the Galaxy Note7 that shows some warnings Samsung has associated with using the iris scanner. Samsung advises against using the iris scanner on babies, when you’re using glasses or contact lenses. Samsung also says that the iris scanner works best at a distance between 25 cm to 35 cm.

You can probably expect to see more rumours of the Galaxy Note7 pop up as it draws closer to the 2nd August launch date. So far it seems like this upcoming smartphone from Samsung will feature a dual edge 5.7-inch QHD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and a 12MP dual-pixel camera at the back.

We will find out exactly what Samsung has in store for us on the launch day itself, so until then, take this information with a grain of salt. In the meantime, would you use an iris scanner like this over the more traditional fingerprint scanner? Let us know in the comments below.
