Xiaomi Malaysia says the Mi 5 is coming soon

UPDATE: The Xiaomi Mi 5 is officially priced at RM1,549. More details here.

Announced during MWC 2016, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is finally heading for Malaysia. Xiaomi Malaysia has just posted a teaser on their Facebook page and we hope it arrives before the Raya holidays.

To recap, this is the best flagship Xiaomi smartphone yet. It gets a compact 5.15″ Full HD display and powering it all is a Snapdragon 820 processor with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. For faster performance, it uses UFS 2.0 flash storage which is the same as the ones you’ll find on the latest Samsung Galaxy flagship models.

Design wise, it feels like a smaller version of the Mi Note especially with its 3D curve glass for the rear. It uses glass and metal but Xiaomi has added more refinement with smoother sloping lines along the sides. For taking pictures, it uses a Sony 16MP f/2.0 camera that’s assisted with a 4-axis Optical Image Stabilisation. The front still retains a 4MP camera that boasts larger 2 micron pixel size.

Over at the front, the Mi 5 now has a home button which also doubles up as a fingerprint scanner. It will support dual-SIM, 4G LTE as well as VoLTE. Keeping the lights on is a 3,000mAh battery which charges via USB Type-C with QuickCharge 3.0.

There are 3 different Mi 5 models with the following specs and pricing:

Xiaomi Mi 5, Snapdragon 820 SoC clocked at 1.8GHz, 3GB RAM, 32GB of storage with 3D glass back – RMB1,999 (around RM1,243)
Xiaomi Mi 5, Snapdragon 820 SoC clocked at 2.15GHz, 3GB RAM, 64GB of storage with 3D glass back – RMB2,299 (around RM1,429)
Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro, Snapdragon 820 SoC clocked at 2.15GHz, 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage with 3D ceramic back – RMB2,699 (around RM1,678)

Based on the India market, it is likely that we are getting the lower spec model that comes with a lower clocked 1.8GHz processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. Xiaomi India is selling it for 24,999 Rp which is about RM1,525 with our current exchange rate. For those who can’t wait, Direct had started offering the Mi 5 3 months ago and you can get the entry-level variant for RM1,399. The higher spec 64GB model is going for RM1,699.
