Sony sent a message with their recent launch at the Mobile World Congress 2016 when they launched the brand new Xperia X series. This was a sign that the company was ditching their classic Xperia Z line and many questioned if it was the right move. Are these new devices good enough to live up to the name?
Well, you can find out soon enough as Sony are launching their latest Xperia X line here in Malaysia next week.
When they launched the Xperia X line in Barcelona, there were three devices, the Xperia XA, Xperia X and Xperia X Performance.
Sitting at the top of the tree was the 5-inch Xperia X Performance which has a Full HD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB of RAM, up to 64GB of expandable internal storage and a 23MP/13MP camera combo. Moving down the tree, we have the Xperia X which shares a lot of the X Performance’s specifications, except it gets a Snapdragon 650 processor and a smaller 2,620 mAh battery (down from the X Performance’s 2,700 mAh). It’s also not water resistant, unlike the X Performance.
Rounding up the trio was “entry-level” Xperia XA. This handset gets a watered down 5-inch 720p display, a MediaTek MT6755 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 13MP/8MP camera combo. Its battery also gets bumped down to a measly 2,300 mAh unit.
After MWC, Sony revealed that there was going to be one more X device, the Xperia X Premium — which is set to be the first smartphone in the world with an HDR display.
In our invite, Sony said that they will be launching the new Xperia X lineup here in Malaysia on the 8th of June and that we would get to try the Xperia X, Xperia XA and “one other, yet to be revealed device”. From the looks of things, it’s likely to be the X Performance, but who knows?
