Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship to be out after Chinese New Year

The Chinese manufacturer’s co-founder (Li Wanqiang) posted a short and sweet post on Weibo earlier today, though it was by no means insignificant; he confirmed that Xiaomi’s Mi 5 will be launched after the Lunar New Year (February 8th), as well as the processor that it’ll have under the hood.

Mr Li detailed in the social media status that the smartphone is currently in mass production, merely awaiting orders to let it out of the gates. He also put the rumour of the Mi 5 having a Snapdragon 820 chipset to bed; confirming that Qualcomm’s top processor will indeed be inside.

This confirmation serves to reignite the flailing rumours that went flying around in early December, even confusing us in the process following the release of the Redmi Note 3 – like seriously, the Chinese manufacturer chose to put an all-metal frame and fingerprint sensor on their more affordable smartphone line – we’re still left in awe but hey, who doesn’t love a good deal?

In spite of getting our bets thrown into the drain, we’d like to think that Xiaomi will match their strategy and utilise metal and a fingerprint sensor on the Mi 5 as well. Leaks apparently make it seem that the device will carry a 5.2-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display – something never seen before on a Mi device – and make use of 4GB of RAM. On paper, having a Snapdragon 820 processor plus that much RAM, we can safely assume it’ll be a beast.

The alleged spec sheet also state that it’ll come in either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage; feature a 16-megapixel rear camera and 13-megapixel front sensor; and a fairly large 3,600 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 included.

This time, we won’t place big bets anymore, just in case we get burned again. Do let us know what you make of all this, we’d like to hear your opinions.
