Xiaomi to launch Redmi Note 2 in Malaysia next week?

Xiaomi is having an event next Tuesday, 3rd November in Kuala Lumpur and its VP for Global, Hugo Barra is coming to town. After being spotted in certification databases of both Malaysia and Singapore, this is likely to be the official launch of the Redmi Note 2, with sales expected to commence shortly after.

According to the official invite, the launch event will announce the product availability for four markets namely Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. To recap on the specs, the Redmi Note 2 is an affordable phablet that could be priced below its mainstream competitors. It features a 5.5″ Full HD display, a MediaTek Octa-Core Helio X10 processor, 2GB of RAM and likely 16GB of storage for our local market. The Redmi Note 2 also comes with an expandable microSD slot, 13MP f/2.2 main camera with PDAF and a front facing 5MP selfie camera.

On top of that, it supports faster 802.11ac WiFi and comes with an IR Blaster which can be a nifty remote control. Keeping the lights on is a removable 3,060mAh battery that supports quick charge. Out of the box, it runs on its latest MIUI 7 that’s based on Android 5.0.

Like most new devices today, it supports dual-SIM with 4G LTE. Dimension wise, it is 8.25mm thick and weighs 160g, which is more compact than the original Redmi Note. In China, the 16GB storage version with dual 4G LTE is priced at 899 CNY, which is about RM602. With the fluctuating currency exchange, Xiaomi might be pricing this higher but we have a hunch that it should be below RM700.
