Once announced, the LG G4 ticked a lot of boxes but left some totally blank. The positive ones that come to mind would be its camera capabilities, good performance (for an 808 SoC), and satisfactory QHD screen. Consequently, according to this rumour, LG wants to build on what it has going for itself but don’t expect it to be out so soon; probably sometime in Q1 next year.
Quoting an anonymous report from an insider, the G5 will have the best of what Qualcomm and Sony has to offer, in the processing and camera department. The latter is supposedly going to be an LG exclusive sensor made by Sony; all 20-megapixels worth, boasting a half an inch diagonal size sensor (the biggest yet).
Comparing the current-gen lot below:
LG G4 – 1 /2.6 inch
Samsung Galaxies – 1/3 inch
iPhone 6/6 Plus – 1/3 inch
Sony Xperia Z5 – 1 /2.3 inch
Nokia PureView 808 – 1 /1.2 inch
So we’ve compared the top end cameras of the smart phone world and you guys decided that more pixels don’t necessarily mean the best photos, in real life scenarios. It doesn’t help either that manufacturers place an absurd amount of emphasis on the number of pixels a camera carries.
Problems at the time with Qualcomm’s hot Snapdragon 810 processor saw LG look off and choose the 808 SoC instead; lets keep our fingers crossed that the 820 is the product of Qualcomm learning from their past and they’ve managed to keep it cool. So it’s safe to say the LG G5 will deliver in processing power – however there have been leaks of LG developing its own signature chipset.
Rumours are rumours, so don’t be too excited for now; nonetheless, we’ll wait till Q1 2016 to see if there’s any weight to this news.
