Consumers are getting spoiled for choice when it comes to affordable data plans. We’ve seen Celcom, Digi and most recently U Mobile engaged in a price war where you can get a postpaid plan with 3GB of data for less than RM40/month. Meanwhile over at Maxis, the most affordable option is their SurfMore 50 plan which comes with 2GB of data at RM50/month.
To sweeten the deal, they are now doubling its data quota from 2GB to 4GB for 6 months. This is applicable for new subscribers that signed up from 25th June until 31st July 2015, and they are extending this to their current subscribers as well. If you’re currently on SurfMore 50, you should have received an SMS about this offer and they will allocate the extra data within 7 days.
While this is a good move, Maxis should really consider making its data plans more affordable. After the introduction of its MaxisOne plan, they have discontinued its SurfMore 75 plan (5GB for RM75) and topping up extra data is rather costly at RM35/GB on SurfMore or RM30/GB on MaxisOne Plan.
Then of course, there’s a concern of network quality which Maxis claims to have the best 4G network in the countries. While telcos can start throwing prices for their postpaid plans, the real challenge is whether they can maintain their network quality and bandwidth. Recently they have invested over RM1 billion to upgrade their network and from the looks of it, we don’t expect them to play the cheap data game anytime soon.
