Xiaomi Mi WiFi – Wireless router with up to 6TB of storage

Xiaomi has just announced a new wireless router that’s simply called the Mi WiFi. While the name sounds simple, this is an epic replacement of its sexy looking Mi Wireless Router that came with 1TB of storage built-in. Design wise, it looks like a simple box with two plastic antennas but it packs a lot more than just a standard router.

You get an enterprise grade router with faster 802.11ac WiFi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, PCB based antenna array for better reception and a whopping 6TB of storage space using surveillance standard hard drives from Seagate and Toshiba. This allows faster read speeds up to 115MB/s while wireless file transfers boast 58MB/s speeds which are twice as fast as USB 2.0. In terms of ports, it gets 4 Gigabit Ethernet LAN at the back and a full sized USB port.

On-board it is powered by a Broadcom 4809C dual-core 1.4GHz processor with 256MB of DDR 3 RAM. The router also functions as a media and NAS solution with a built-in client to handle video and torrent downloads. So before you head home, you can use a smart phone app to queue movies to download and watch them once you’ve returned. For an always-on 24/7 operation, the Mi WiFi is kept cool with a graphics grade cooling system with a large heatsink and a quiet cooler fan.

If you take lots of photos, the Mi WiFi also acts as a central storage hub and it performs direct backup from your cameras including Smart CCTVs like the Yi Camera. The Mi WiFi costs 2,999 CNY (about RM1,801) for the 6TB version and if that’s too much, there’s a 1TB version going for 699 CNY (about RM419).

To boost your WiFi reception throughout your home, there’s an optional Mi WiFi Amplifier that’s going for 39 CNY (about RM23). Unlike other WiFi boosters or repeaters that could be cumbersome to set up, the WiFi Amplifier is as easy as plug and use. Just plug the Amplifier stick onto the Mi WiFi’s USB adapter and once the paring is done, you can use it anywhere in the house with a USB adapter.

No word on when this will be sold out of China but we reckon some grey importers would be able to offer this in Malaysia soon. For more info, you can check out the Mi WiFi product page.
