Digi’s new postpaid plans have gotten smarter for 2015

Digi was the first telco in Malaysia to introduce an internet centric postpaid offering with its Smart Plan in 2010. You pay only for data, while calls and SMS are charged only when you need them. It was the ideal option for those wanting just the Internet and very little of everything else.

Then two years back, Digi got a little creative by bundling extra phone calls, SMS and that’s not all. They even split your internet quota for “Smart Apps” which is used specifically for social and instant messaging and the remaining for other uses such as web browsing, YouTube and tethering. That wasn’t too smart especially when the competition had caught on and offered more simplified data-only options such as Maxis SurfMore and Celcom First Data plans.

After its recent rebranding, Digi has brought its smart plan back from the drawing board with a refreshed new offering. Now things are starting to look a lot “smarter” than before which could please the two different types of users.

For 2015, the new Smart Plans retain the same monthly commitments of RM50, RM78, RM108 and RM148. What’s changed is the bundled offering which you can choose between High Data and High Voice. Speaking of data, they have finally do away with the ridiculous quota split so you can now utilise your quota freely without restrictions. If you’re looking for an affordable plan, the lowest Smart Plan RM50 gives you either 2GB of data + 100 minute voice + 100 SMS or 250MB data + 400 minutes voice + 400 SMS.

As you commit for its higher plans like Smart Plan 78, 108 and 148, you get to enjoy additional value such as unlimited WhatsApp+WeChat instant messaging and Free Music Freedom subscription that lets you stream or download music without utilising your data quota. For its higher Smart Plan 108 and 148 plans, they are also throwing in free unlimited Facebook usage but take note it is applicable for specific High Data/High Voice options only.

At the surface, it looks good that Digi is offering flexibility of its bundling to cater for voice or data centric users but it isn’t as dynamic as Celcom’s new FIRST postpaid plan that self-optimises according to usage. On the other hand, its Smart Plan 108 and 148 also gives you unlimited local voice calls and SMS if you opt for High Voice. This can be seen a direct competition to MaxisOne Plan and you get slightly more data quota as well.
