Samsung Galaxy S6 edge to cost more than the iPhone 6 Plus?

The latest Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge will be available globally starting on 10th April. While we can’t be sure if Malaysia will be having it on the same date, we now have some pricing details from several countries.

For the base Galaxy S6, you could expect a higher price than the Galaxy S5 (Launch price: RM2,399) due to its higher on-board storage of 32GB. We reckon that it could be priced around the current Galaxy Note 4 range of about RM2,499-RM2,600. If you’re eyeing for the dual curved display Galaxy S6 edge, be prepared to pay more than the iPhone 6 Plus.

In most countries in Europe such as Austria, Finland, Spain and Slovakia, the Galaxy S6 is priced from 699 Euros while its more premium Galaxy S6 edge is priced at 849 Euros. When converted directly, that costs RM2,700 and RM3,282 respectively.

Obviously the prices of phones are different in most markets due to varying shipping cost and taxes. To give it more context that’s closer to home, we can compare the iPhone selling price which is priced at 699 Euros for the 16GB iPhone 6 and 799 Euros for the 16GB iPhone 6 Plus in those markets. Even after the iPhone price increase for Malaysia, several European countries are still retaining the same iPhone pricing since its launch late last year.

So going back to the Galaxy S6 edge price of 849 Euros. That’s 50 Euros (About RM200) more than the iPhone 6 Plus 16GB that’s currently priced at RM2,949 (formerly RM2,749). Furthermore, the iPhone 6 Plus is a much larger device with a 5.5″ screen, which could be a deal breaker for some since the Galaxy S6 edge is having a smaller 5.1″ screen size. Essentially both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge are identical underneath and the only difference is the curved screen and perhaps a slightly larger capacity battery (50mAh). Would you go for the Galaxy S6 edge if it costs RM500 more than the standard S6? Let us know in the comments below.
