Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 could be the world’s thinnest tablet at 5.4mm

Samsung’s second gen Galaxy Tab S tablet is currently in the works, with the tablet to steal the crown of the thinnest by being even thinner than the Dell Venue 8 7000 who had previously stolen Apple’s iPad Air 2 ‘s throne. Measuring in at 5.4mm thin, it’s a whole lot skinnier than the iPad Air 2’s 6.1mm and the Venue 8 7000’s 6.0mm.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 will come in 8 inch and 9.7 inch models with the model numbers SM-T710 and SM-T810 respectively. There isn’t significant difference between the original Tab S and Tab S 2 tablets with the most noticeable improvement being the switch to a 4:3 aspect ratio for the Super AMOLED displays, which is a drop from 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution on it’s predecessor in favour of 2048 x 1536 resolution. This shouldn’t make too much difference as the resolution will still be quite high, especially on the 8 inch model.

As far as specs go both flavours of Tab S 2 will sport an Exynos 5433 processor (which might be upgraded to an Exynos 7420) Android 5.0.2 out of the box, Cat.6 LTE connectivity up to 300 Mbps, 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera, 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage up to 128GB. The tablets are said to have 3,580 and 5,870 mAh battery capacities as well as weighing in at 260g and 407g respectively, though these specifications could change as they near launch date.

The Galaxy Tab S 2 tablets are also rumoured to feature a metallic frame, which is something they haven’t done with a tablet since the Galaxy Tab 7.7, and the two tablets will have dimensions of 198.2×134.5×5.4 for the 8 inch model and  237.1×168.8×5.4 for the 9.7 inch model. No word yet when the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 will be made official but sources state that a mid-2015 release is possible.
