Xiaomi’s latest affordable smart phone the Redmi 2 was just announced two weeks ago and it appears to be coming soon to Malaysia. A new dual-SIM device with 4G LTE support (1800MHz/2600MHz) has been spotted on our local SIRIM database with the model number 2014817. Apart from Malaysia, the same device also has passed certification in Singapore where it was specifically listed as the Redmi 2.
To recap on the specs, the Redmi 2 carries the same 4.7″ IPS display with a HD 720p resolution (1280×768) as the current Redmi 1S but it gets a newer 64-bit 1.2GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 410 processor and a newer MIUI 6 operating system based on Android 4.4 inside. It still gets 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage which can be further be expanded with microSD.
For taking pictures, the rear gets a 8MP f/2.2 camera while the front gets a 2MP shooter. The battery capacity is slightly more than its predecessor with a removable 2,200mAh battery and it supports QuickCharge that claims to be 40% faster than normal charging. In the hands, the Redmi 2 is lighter and thinner than the previous model, and overall it is more rounded at corners compared to its current model. Unlike the Redmi series where you have to choose between a dual-SIM 3G or a single-SIM 4G version, the new Redmi 2 offers the best of both worlds. Under the cover, it comes with two micro-SIM slots that both supports 4G LTE with dual standby.
In China, the Redmi 2 is priced at 699 CNY which is about RM396. As comparison, the Redmi 1S with dual-SIM 3G is currently priced at RM419.
Thanks Wei Aun and @KevinNgTK for the heads up!
Check out a couple of hands-on photos of the Redmi 2 after the break.
