Sony is working on a high-res 12.9″ Xperia tablet. To be released during first half of 2015

Apple has been rumoured to be make a larger 12.2″ tablet that could be called as the iPad Air Plus. Now it appears that Sony too has similar plans as well. According to a source, Sony is reported to be working on an ultra-high resolution 12.9″ Xperia Tablet that’s targeted at the high-end segment.

Boasting a possible 4K (3840×2400) resolution display, the upcoming Xperia Tablet is expected to be priced above US$1,000. This makes it a very niche product like the Samsung Galaxy NotePro 12.2. Other details of the new device include a slim 8.6mm profile and it will be running on Qualcomm processor with a 8MP main camera. At the moment, Sony’s tablet offering consists of a full sized 10.1″ Xperia Z2 Tablet and a smaller 8″ Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

According to a report, the tablet business only contributes 5% to Sony’s overall sales and they are expecting this to shrink to 3-4% by 2016. Considering Sony has disposed its VAIO PC business, they could be making up for lost ground with a productivity tablet like the Microsoft Surface Pro 3.
