It is a busy time for smart wearables and Samsung has announced its Gear S, its first ever standalone smart watch that comes with 3G connectivity. Unlike its previous Gear Smart Watches, the Gear S has a 3G SIM slot underneath which lets you make calls and SMS.
If you like the display on the Gear Fit, you’ll be pleased to know that the Gear S comes with a 2″ curved AMOLED display that does 480×360 pixels resolution which is probably the highest for a smart watch currently. Powering the device is a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and it runs on Tizen OS like its predecessor. Also built-in is a heart rate sensor, barometer and even a UV sensor as well.
On-board it gets a tiny 300mAh battery which Samsung says it could last for 2 days. For an active lifestyle, it also comes with water and dust resistance rated at IP67. Since this is a 3G connected device, you won’t need to pair it with a smart phone. There’s bluetooth and WiFi connectivity as well so you can stay truly connected from your wrist.
It is possible to reply to messages using its on-screen keyboard or alternatively you can use S-Voice to dictate your reply. We are curious to see how would the on-screen keyboard work for a tiny screen. Earlier on, minuum had released a working keyboard for the Galaxy Gear.
For a more practical experience, Samsung has also announced the Gear Circle, a wireless bluetooth headset which lets you receive calls, make voice commands or listening to music hands free. There’s a magnetic lock which rests on your neck comfortable when not in use. It even vibrates to alert you when there’s a new notification. The Gear S and the Gear Circle is expected to be released starting from October.
