Samsung has finally launched its first ever Tizen based smart phone which will be simply called as the Samsung Z. Design wise, it looks like a mixture of Galaxy S5 and the squarish looking LG Prada 3.0.
It terms of specs, the Z runs on a 2.3GHz Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM and comes with a 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED display that does 1280×720 pixels resolution. It gets a 8MP main camera and a 2.1MP front facing unit. On-board there’s 16GB of storage which can be expanded with microSD up to 64GB.
Connectivity wise, the Samsung Z gets full 4G LTE support with speeds up to 150Mbps, Bluetooth 4.0 BLE, NFC, WiFi 802.11n and even comes with an IR remote. Overall it weighs 136 grams which is lighter than the GalaxY S5 by merely 9 grams but it is slightly thicker at 8.5mm (Galaxy S5: 8.1mm).
To discover and install new apps, there will be a Tizen Store on the Samsung Z. In its bid to increase the app library further, Samsung is running a special promotional developers program to encourage Tizen based app developments. Like the early BlackBerry 10 OS, the Tizen platform can run Android apps but some conversions would be necessary.
The Samsung Z will make its appearance at the coming Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco which is happening on 3rd June. In terms of sales availability, it will go on sale in Russia in Q3 followed by other markets. As this is a brand new mobile platform, Samsung would need to work extremely hard to win early adopters over. Their non-Galaxy models such as their Bada & Windows Phone line up hasn’t been well received in our region.
