The modular Project Ara smart phone is slowly becoming a reality. The project which is currently under Google is expected to showcase its first working prototype as early as next month. Now they have just released a Module Development Kit which gives manufacturers and developers a better idea of making compatible modules for the smart phone.
The MDK (Module Development Kit) shows 3 different Endoskeleton variants – Small, Regular and Large to cater for the vast majority of users. While the Endoskeleton is developed by Google, each module component can be developed by 3rd party provided it meets the strict specification and dimensions within the guidelines under the MDK.
The possibilities and customisations are endless. At the back, you can pick and choose your preferred processor, camera, battery and various sensors and health monitoring modules while the front can be fitted either a full touch display or you can leave a little more room for a QWERTY keyboard or even a trackpad. Now this is looking like a true personal smart phone beyond the custom skins and user interfaces. The first commercial Ara device is targeted to go on sale in early 2015 with a variety of modules available.
You can take a glimpse of the module design and assembly after the break.
