HTC announces entry-level Desire 310 smart phone

HTC appears to be very busy with their upcoming All New HTC One smart phone for 2014 but they have not neglected its entry level segment just yet. After all, HTC needs to roll out more affordable smart phones in order to drive much needed sales volume this year.

Now they have just introduced the Desire 310, a new entry-level device which is seen as a replacement for the current HTC Desire 300. Instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the new Desire 310 runs on a 1.3GHz Quad-Core MediaTek MT6582M processor with 1GB of RAM. The front display is a modest 4.5″ display that pushes 854×480 pixels resolution and it comes with 5MP main camera, a front facing VGA camera and a rather generous 2,000mAh capacity battery. Out of the box, it runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. From the official images, the new Desire 310 appears to be using on-screen buttons which is probably HTC’s new direction to move away from its traditional capacitive buttons.

It will be available first in their homeland Taiwan in April and it is expected to be available internationally much later. The Desire 310 comes in either Single SIM and Dual-SIM variants as well, which is popular among emerging markets. The current HTC Desire 300 is priced at RM699 and HTC needs to price this properly if they intend to capture a significant chunk in the competitive entry level segment. In Malaysia, consumers are getting spoilt with choices like the Moto G which is priced at RM698 and other new Chinese brands like XiaoMi which offers a lot more for less.
