Wearable gadgets especially smart watches are becoming the next big thing. So far we’ve seen Pebble, Samsung, Sony & most recently Qualcomm releasing their versions of a connected smart watch. The only thing though, is that all of these devices require pairing via bluetooth to your existing smart phone.
Now a new comer Neptune has introduced Pine, a smart watch which you can use on its own without an accompanying smart phone with you. It comes with a larger 2.4″ display that pushes 320×240 pixels (same resolution as entry level Android smart phones), a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM and a choice of 16GB and 32GB of storage. While the screen looks tiny, it is capable of displaying a full QWERTY keyboard but we think typing would be easier with Swype.
Need to take pictures? It comes with not one but two cameras consisting of a 5MP rear facing camera and a VGA front facing shooter. In terms of connectivity, it accepts Micro SIM with 3G HSPA+ support and comes with Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS. If you need to talk, it even supports voice call and SMS as well.
On-board the Pine watch is powered with a 810mAh battery which can be charged using a more common micro-USB cable. In a nutshell, this is like a smart phone that’s small enough to fit on your wrist. At the moment it runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the latest Android 4.4 KitKat update is already in the pipeline. Since it is a full fledged Android device, it has full access to a wide choice of apps provided it supports the low display resolution.
It is also worth pointing out that Pine was recently made its debut on Kickstarter and has already exceeded its $100,000 Canadian Dollars goal in just a couple of days. Pine is currently going at Canadian $199 for the 16GB unit on Kickstarter, which is roughly RM605.
