By the numbers: iPhone 5C & iPhone 5S compared with other smart phones

With the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C being revealed, how would they stack up against the current crop of smart phones? To find out, we’ve pitted the latest flagship smart phone numbers side by side for easy reference. Among the devices compared include the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, HTC One, HTC Butterfly S, LG G2, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Nokia Lumia 925 and Nokia Lumia 1020.

It is also interesting to see what has changed exactly a year ago when the iPhone 5 was launched. Compared with the latest smart phones in September 2012, the iPhone & Windows Phone didn’t change dramatically. However for Android devices, the displays had gone Full HD with larger size and processors getting higher bumps in clock speed while manufacturers putting more effort in trimming down the thickness.

Dimension wise, the iPhone 5 / 5S is still the thinnest and lightest in this comparison with exception of the Huawei Ascend P6 which is merely 6.18mm thick and the ultra large Xperia Z Ultra at 6.5mm. In terms of pixel density, the HTC One is still the highest at 469ppi which crams a Full HD resolution into a smaller 4.7″ screen.

If battery capacity is what you’re looking for, the Xperia Z Ultra and Galaxy Note 3 packs the most with 3,200mAh. For the photography enthusiasts, the 2 notable players here with the Lumia 1020 having the largest sensor size at 1/1.5″ with a insanely high 41MP. This is followed by the recently launched Xperia Z1 which packs a respectable 1/2.3″ sensor that does 20.7MP.

The Sony Xperias are the only water friendly device in this comparison which carries a IP58 Water resistant rating. Another alternative for underwater use would be the Galaxy S4 Active (not shown here) which comes with a lower IP57 rating.

With 4G LTE being deployed, it is worth pointing out that all models do come with LTE support however do be wary that it depends on the version that’s available in Malaysia. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is available in both 3G only and 4G LTE variants while the 6.4″ Sony Xperia Z Ultra that we have here is the HSPA+ version.

If you’re in the market for a new smart phone, which would you pick? As usual if you spot any errors, do alert us in the comment section below.
