Along with the bargain basement Desire 200, HTC has also announced the Desire 600 in Malaysia. With the Desire 600, HTC aims to attract users who are looking for a fairly decent performance at a reasonable price point.
On the spec sheet, the Desire 600 gets a 4.5-inch qHD (960×540 pixel resolution, about 244ppi) Super LCD 2 display, there’s also a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 200 processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion up to an additional 64GB.
You also get an 8MP rear camera (720p video) with HTC’s backside illuminated image chip, a 1.2MP front camera and HTC’s great BoomSound dual-front speakers with a dedicated built-in amplifier and Beats Audio integration. The Desire 600 runs Android 4.2 with BlinkFeed but you don’t get HTC Zoe feature which is a pity because we like that feature very much.
Battery is rated at 1,860mAh. In addition to all this the Desire 600 also has dual-SIM support and it goes on sale in Malaysia for RM1,199.
The Desire 600 brings to the table an interesting feature set at a pretty good price point but it’s in a market segment that’s not short of very capable competition. Competition like the Sony Xperia SP offers a 720p 4.6-inch HD screen (about 319ppi), a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion up to 64GB, an 8MP 1080p rear camera and LTE support plus a bigger 2,370mAh battery for RM1,299.
There’s also the upcoming Sony Xperia ZR which we think will probably occupy the same price bracket that you can consider. In our opinion, it’s hard to choose the Desire 600 over the Xperia’s water friendly talents. The ability to shoot videos underwater trumps dual-SIM support for most users.
