Sony introduces 4.6″ Xperia SP and 4.3″ Xperia L

Sony has just announced its new Xperia SP and Xperia L which is a mid to entry level Android smart phone device positioned right below its flagship Xperia Z/ZL. In 2012, we saw Sony NXT Series with the Xperia S, P and U which looked rather identical. This time around, the 2 new devices are distinctively different and inherits some of the interesting features from previous devices. Read on for the full details.

Sony Xperia SP

First up is the Sony Xperia SP which features an all aluminium frame that gives it a more premium feel. The front comes with a 4.6″ Reality Display that pushes 1280×720 pixels resolution giving a pixel density of 319ppi. Powering the device is a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor running at 1.7GHz which is mated with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It also comes with expandable microSD card storage, a 8MP rear camera and a dedicated camera button with Fast Capture. Over at the front there’s also a VGA camera for conference calls. On-board it comes with a decent 2,370mAh battery, NFC connectivity and overall it weighs 155 grams. It comes with 3 colours – Black, White & Red.

What’s more interesting with the Xperia SP is that the transparent belt is back and is now customisable with various colours. Not only it changes colours like the Xperia U, but you can even pick what colour to represent the type of notifications. Owners of the Xperia U would typically customise their transparent belt colours via a 3rd party app.

Following the Xperia Z design, the Xperia SP also features the brushed aluminium power button that’s located on the right side for easy reach. Overall, it does look like an interesting mid-range device and a worthy replacement of the former aluminium clad Xperia P.

Sony Xperia L

Next is the 4.3″ Sony Xperia L which is their entry-mid level device that’s powered with a dual-core 1.0GHz Qualcomm processor and 1GB of RAM. The display pushes a modest 854×480 pixels resolution and like the Xperia SP comes with a main 8MP shooter with a front facing VGA camera. It also features a side aluminium power button combined with Sony’s popular arc design.

Despite its lower spec, the Xperia L also comes with NFC connectivity, 1,900mAh battery and a choice of 3 colours – Black, White and Red. For notification, the Xperia L comes with a thin ilumination bar at the bottom. If you need to take photos quickly, the Xperia L also comes with Fast Capture that’s activated with a dedicated camera button.
