The Nokia 808 PureView Arrives in Malaysia

The world’s first 41MP camera phone has arrived in Malaysia. Available in black and white (pity red is not available at launch), the Nokia 808 PureView goes on sale in Malaysia with a recommended retail price of RM1,899 outright from Nokia retail stores.

The Nokia believes the 808 PureView represents a revolution in imaging utilizing a never used before 41MP 1/1.2-inch sensor mated to precision Carl Zeiss optics to output 5MP images and full 1080p HD video. This result in enhanced low-light capabilities, improved level of detail and clarity, and distortion free zoom.

While the massive 41MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics is a headlining feature of the Nokia 808, Nokia is also keen to highlight the audio recording capabilities of the device. Nokia says the 808 PureView is the world’s first device to include Rich Recording that enables distortion-free CD quality audio recording levels of up to 140 dB. Nokia says this capability was only previously possible with advanced external microphones. With the Rich Recording feature, audio recording in noisy environments up to 140bB should be distortion free and clear making the 808 PureView the perfect camera phone to take for recording concerts.

Aside from this, the 808 PureView features a 4-inch Gorilla Glass AMOLED ClearBlack display with a rather low resolution of 640×360 producing a pixel density of around 184ppi – the lowest among the current crop of 4-inch displays. Running on Nokia latest Symbian variant, Belle, the 808 PureView is powered by a 1.3Ghz single-core ARM11 processor with 512RAM and 16GB of on board storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 32GB plus a 1,400mAh battery.

When we got word that the Nokia 808 PureView was coming to Malaysia, we were expecting a retail price of around RM1,600 or lower. RM1,899 is rather steep considering the processing power and operating system that the device is packing. Taking into account what the competition has to offer, you’d have to be really into taking pictures with your mobile phone to want to get the 808 PureView. If only Nokia had priced this lower, the 808 PureView would probably be a pretty decent seller.
