ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime revealed

ASUS today has finally revealed the next generation Eee Pad Transformer – The Transformer Prime. The biggest highlight of all is its all new Tegra 3 quad-core processor, which makes ASUS the first to offer it. As teased earlier, the Transformer Prime offers a aluminium metallic swirl design which comes in 2 colours – Amethyst Grey and Champagne Gold.

It maintains the similar sized 10.1″ LED Backlit Super IPS+ screen which displays 1280×800 resolution. Just like its predecessor, the display supports 10 finger multitouch and toughen with Corning’s Gorilla Glass. The new Super IPS+ displays claims to be brighter at 600nits and comes with hydro-oleophobic coating to reduce fingerprint – a common issue with the previous Transformer. Interally, it comes with 1GB of RAM and a choice of 32GB or 64GB of storage. At the back, the camera is bumped up to f/2.4 8MP with assisted flash and there’s a 1.2MP camera at the front. Surprisingly there’s no clock speed mentioned but Android Central reckons it runs at 1.3GHz/1.4GHz.

In terms of dimensions, the Transformer Prime is even thinner at 8.3mm, even thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1’s 8.6mm thickness. In terms of weight, the new Prime is weighs 586 grams which is a huge improvement from its original’s 680 grams.

For those that needs to connect with multiple media and devices, the Transformer Prime still retains its offering of ports such as microSD card slot, micro HDMI, SD card reader and USB 2.0 on the dock.

With the power efficiencies of the new Tegra 3 chipset, ASUS claims longer battery life up to 12 hours standalone or 18 hours when used together with the keyboard dock. The previous Transformer was rated up to 16 hours with dock.

The Transformer Prime is expected to be available in December and price starts at US$499 for the 32GB version with the keyboard dock sold separately at US$149. It runs on Android 3.2 which is upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it is rolled out.
