Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 officially revealed

Exactly a year ago, the original Samsung Galaxy Tab created the first wave of Android tablets when it was launched on 2 September 2010. Now Samsung has revealed its worthy successor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 which offers a slightly bigger screen at 7.7 inches and uses its top of the line Super AMOLED Plus.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Note, it packs a 1.4GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and runs on the latest Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS. In terms of imaging, there’s a 3MP Autofocus camera at the back and a 2MP front facing camera.

While the original Galaxy Tab was a perfect communication device with its ability to make calls and send SMS, Samsung has improved this aspect for the 7.7. According to the press release, there’s no need to bring a bluetooth headset for voice calls as it is possible to calls in public with “Receiver Mode”. We wonder how this works and if it can be used like a typical smart phone, that would be just great. From the official pics, it looks like a speaker at the top of the device which probably means you can make calls in typical smart phone manner.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 comes with a generous 5,100mAh battery and weighs only 335g, which is 45g lighter than its predecessor. When compared to its larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.6mm thickness), it is even thinner at 7.89mm! Another plus point for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a microSD slot which lets you increase more storage up to 32GB. During the announcement, it is understood that there are 3 variants – 16GB/32GB/64GB.

No pricing and region availability were announced currently. Overall, the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a huge improvement over its predecessor and we’re curious to know how much will it go for in Malaysia. Previously when the original was launched locally, it was priced at a hefty RM2699. Now it goes outright for RM1599 and with a variety of telco bundling options. If Samsung price this right, they will have another hot seller in their hands.
