What goes into the design of a mobile phone

Mobile phone designs have come a long, long way since the day of the device we all affectionate call the “brick” or “tumbler” phone.

Today, mobile phones are almost all screen with large touch interfaces dominating the front facia of the device. Mobile phones of today are more powerful with the processing power equivalent to some computers circa the late 90s. Modern mobiles lasts longer too thanks to advancements in battery and mobile cellular technology.

But what factors influence mobile phone design? Why has it evolved to the shape that it is today? What goes engineering consideration goes into the design of a mobile phone?
