Sony Ericsson announces shipping of Xperia X8, still quiet on Android 2.X update

Sony Ericsson has just announced that they have started shipping the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 worldwide but we find it odd as it has been in the market already. In Malaysia, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is going for RM899 via PBBemall.

The problem here is that Sony Ericsson is still sticking to Android 1.6 and there’s no clear indication when newer updates are available. It is foolish to launch a “new” phone today without Android 2.2 Froyo and X8 to be launched with 1.6 is certainly a bad choice considering new apps requiring 2.X and above.

Despite numerous rumours or statements that a new update is coming, people are getting fed up with Sony Ericsson as indicated in their blog comments for the Xperia X8 announcement. We’re not sure what’s going on with Sony Ericsson. If they are committed with Android platform, they shouldn’t compromise with software updates. It is a shame considering Sony Ericsson is a pioneer mobile device manufacturer to end up this way. If they don’t buck up, they might as well exit the Android platform.
