HTC announces the Desire Z and Desire HD power pair

After weeks of leaks and rumours, HTC has finally revealed it’s latest duo of high-end Android smartphones. No prizes on the names but the HTC Desire Z and Desire HD looks to be a formidable combination of performance and form factor that is set to put HTC in the top spot for when it comes to Android devices.

HTC Desire Z
When it comes to specs of this Android device with a full QWERTY keyboard, there’s no surprises here. As earlier speculated, the Desire Z is the first phone to utilize the latest 800MHz Qualcomm 7230 processor that promises improved performance, battery life and faster startup.

The Desire Z runs Android 2.2 (froyo) and comes with 4GB of on board memory in the US as the G2 but in UK it comes with a minuscule 1.5GB, most likely Malaysian versions will be simillar. There’s, thankfully, 512MB of RAM. In terms of imaging, the Desire Z is decked with a 5MP camera with flash. The 5MP shoots 720p videos as well. All this is controlled by a 3.7in 480×800 resolution screen that’s most probably an SLCD.

The HTC Desire Z unique “pop hinge” that opens to reveal a QWERTY keyboard that looks to be one of the simplest, most spaced-out keyboard we’ve seen on a mobile device. Another unique feature of the keyboard are two user-customizable keys for providing instant access to common functions without the need dig up layers of menus.

Don’t let the 800Mhz clock speed fool you. The more efficient 7230 chip is said to deliver better performance compared to the 1GHz processor powering the original Desire. With a dedicated GPU 7230 taking the graphic processing load of the main processor, you can expect to see improved graphic performance on the Desire Z as well.

HTC Desire HD
If you’re more of a multimedia user on your smartphone then the HTC Desire HD is probably something righ up your alley. With a huge 4.3in LCD display along with Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual sound capabilities, the Desire HD looks to be a very capable mobile media player.

The Desire HD is powered by the new 1GHz Qualcomm 8255 Snapdragon processor with a whopping 758MB of RAM and is running Android 2.2 (froyo) though on board storage is a similarly limited 1.5GB as the Desire Z. There’s an 8MP camera with dual flash on board capable of shooting 720p videos.

Like the HTC Legend, the Desire HD is sculpted from a block of solid aluminum that promises to deliver top-notch build-quality.

The best part about all this is the both the Desire Z and Desire HD will be released in the European and Asian markets from October 2010 onwards. For HTC Malaysian fans, you’ll be looking at a probable 2010 availability of both phones here.

With the iPhone 4, Nokia N8 and BlackBerry Torch launch in Malaysian all looming in the horizon, the final quarter of 2010 will be a very busy year for the local gadget aficionados.
