The Butterfly series may not get as much prominence as its One series, but it has a couple of “firsts” for HTC. The first generation Butterfly was one of the first smart phones to have a Full HD display and the current Butterfly 2 is their first international device that can be submerged in water without the need of flaps for its charging port. As the world awaits for its new HTC One M9, details of its 3rd generation Butterfly has started to surface, thanks to serial leaker @upleaks.
According to their source, the Butterfly 3 would feature a slightly bigger 5.2″ display that pushes WQHD display (possibly 2560×1440). This makes it their first Quad HD smart phone, considering the upcoming HTC One flagship is likely to retain its Full HD resolution. In terms of availability, don’t expect it to come anytime soon as the Butterfly 3 is expected to be released on the 2nd half of 2015. The current Butterfly 2 was announced in August (aka J Butterfly in Japan) and it went on sale in Malaysia the following month.
Most manufacturers shy away from having a Quad HD display on smart phones due to its thirstier power consumption. Hopefully by the 2nd half of this year, we should see more power efficient means of supporting higher definition display and still able to push at least a full day of battery life.
