U Mobile has scored several significant 5G wins in Opensignal’s latest Malaysia Mobile Network Experience report, as the telco continues to roll out its own ULTRA5G network.
As announced in April, the orange telco claimed to have achieved 82.9% 5G population coverage in less than 9 months. The feat was also recognised as the fastest 5G rollout in the country.
According to Opensignal, U Mobile had performed strongly across several 5G metrics, covering areas such as network quality, speed, availability and coverage experience.
For the period between 1st April to 29th June 2026, they have collected the most regional awards in Malaysia with 51 sole and 61 shared victories.
However, there’s an important detail about the latest results. Opensignal’s data collection period ended on 29th June 2026, just two days before U Mobile customers were fully offloaded from Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) 5G network on 1st July.
This means the latest results does not provide a complete picture of the U Mobile 5G experience after leaving DNB. At the moment, DNB’s 5G network is utilised by CelcomDigi, Maxis, Unifi and Yes.
U Mobile ranked #1 for 5G downloads and 5G Availability
According to the report, U Mobile stood out for having the highest 5G download speed of 280.4Mbps. This is followed by Unifi Mobile at 235.2Mbps, Maxis at 208.2Mbps, Yes 5G at 207.2Mbps and CelcomDigi at 189.9Mbps.
However, for 5G upload, CelcomDigi is the winner at 32.9Mbps, followed by Maxis at 32.3Mbps, Unifi Mobile at 32.2Mbps, U Mobile at 31.2Mbps and Yes at 25.9Mbps.
When it comes to 5G coverage, all telcos are declared as joint winners with the same score of 3.75. However, for 5G availability, which is essentially a measurement of time spent connected to a 5G network, U Mobile comes first with a score of 66.6%, followed by Yes with 54.4%, Maxis at 53.2%, Unifi Mobile at 50.7% and CelcomDigi at 48.9%.
It would be interesting to see what happens for 5G coverage and 5G availability in Opensignal’s next report following U Mobile’s exit from DNB.
In addition, DNB has started activating its extra 100MHz spectrum block for 3.5GHz which should help solve congestion issues on their network.
ULTRA5G shines in 5G SA availability and coverage
In a separate Opensignal report focusing on ULTRA5G network over a 90 day period from 1st April to 1st June 2026, they found that U Mobile customers are getting a significant improvement for time on 5G and reliability.
Since launch, it claims that U Mobile customers are now on 5G more than 50% of the time, while its reliability experience score has jumped from 781 to 884.
The report attributed U Mobile’s recent gains to its fast expansion of 5G Standalone (5G SA) as users tend to get higher availability and consistency than non-standalone 5G (5G NSA).
At the moment, only U Mobile and Yes 5G are offering 5G SA to the masses, while CelcomDigi and Maxis are only offering it for select business customers and enterprise use cases.
U Mobile initially started offering 5G SA on DNB network for selected plans back in February 2025 and eventually on its new ULTRA5G network back in October 2025. However, it was Yes 5G that was the first in Malaysia to offer 5G SA and 5G Advanced to mass consumers across prepaid, postpaid and broadband in December 2025.
Based on Opensignal’s data, U Mobile had overtook DNB network for 5G SA availability in March 2026 after it automatically provisioned all new postpaid signups with 5G SA from 13th March 2026.
One area where U Mobile had demonstrated significant advantage is indoor 5G connectivity. This is thanks to the telco’s focus on 5G in-building coverage which covers malls, airports, transportation hubs, hotels, convention centres, event spaces and hospitals.
In Opensignal’s April analysis, Opensignal said U Mobile users were twice as likely to experience an “Excellent” 5G signal indoors (≥85 dBm) compared to users on other Malaysian networks.
It added that only 8% of U Mobile’s indoor readings were classified as “Weak”, “Very Weak” or “Dead Zone”, compared to 24% for other networks.
U Mobile had widest 5G Standalone footprint before leaving DNB
As illustrated above, Opensignal said U Mobile achieved a wider nationwide 5G standalone footprint than DNB’s 5G network based on data collected between 1st to 30th April 2026.
It is worth noting that the report was generated when U Mobile had access to both DNB and its own ULTRA5G network, which granted them the widest access to 5G coverage in the country at the time.
After U Mobile’s exit from DNB in July, some customers may experience 5G coverage gaps which were previously covered by DNB.
