The Sarawak state government is offering 25% discount for all domestic electricity users in the state from April to December 2026.

The discount was announced alongside other measures to help people cope with the rising cost of living due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Other measures announced by the state government include increasing the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) assistance from RM950 to RM1,100 for households, RM500 to RM600 for senior citizens and RM300 to RM375 for eligible single individuals. Nearly 900,000 eligible recipients are expected to benefit from this assistance.

The move to provide 25% discount for domestic electricity users is expected to benefit 714,557 users. The 9-month subsidy initiative will cost the state government RM188.1 million.

Sarawak has the cheapest and greenest electricity in Malaysia

Sarawak Energy currently offers the lowest unsubsidised electricity tariffs in Malaysia and is said to be amongst the most competitive in Southeast Asia. According to the utility company, the average tariff is 28 sen per kWh for its 700,000 account holders.

Sarawak already has surpassed its 2030 target of having 60% renewable energy. As of last year, more than 70% of its electricity generation comes from renewables, primarily from hydropower, supported by solar.

In fact, Sarawak is home to Malaysia’s largest floating solar installation. The 50MW Solar Farm is deployed at Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant’s reservoir.

Sarawak Energy Berhad’s Domestic Tariff

Residential users (Domestic) in Sarawak currently enjoy cheap electricity rates from as low as 18 sen per kWh for consumption below 150 kWh, while the highest tier is 31.5 sen per kWh for usage above 1300 kWh.

If we calculate the current bill estimation based on a monthly usage of 1,200kWh, a Sarawak household would only need to pay RM386.88 for their SEB bill versus RM567.95 for TNB Bill in Peninsular Malaysia.

1200kWh domestic electricity usage. Sarawak Energy Berhad (RM386.88) vs Tenaga Nasional Berhad (RM567.95)

If you charge an EV at home based on a total monthly consumption of 1200kWh (inclusive of tax), it will only cost RM0.32 per kWh in Sarawak versus RM0.47 per kWh in Peninsular Malaysia.

With the latest 25% discount initiative for Sarawak domestic bills until the end of this year, that means charging an EV at a Sarawak home (1200kWh usage) would cost about RM0.24 per kWh.
