Volvo Car Malaysia to recall EX30 due to battery safety concerns

Volvo has issued a global recall for affected electric vehicles (EV), particularly the EX30 due to battery safety concerns. A potential safety hazard was reported about Sunwoda’s high-voltage batteries which are fitted on Volvo’s compact electric crossover.

Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has issued a statement confirming that the recall affects EX30 units sold in Malaysia and they have provided an urgent advisory for owners in Malaysia.

Similar recalls have been made in other markets including Australia, South Africa and United Kingdom.

According to VCM, the recall affects EX30 EVs manufactured from 2024 to 2025 for both Single-Motor and Twin Motor Performance variants.

It added that in rare cases, the battery can overheat when charged to a high level, which could in worst case scenario lead to fire starting in the battery.

The brand emphasised that safety remains their top priority. While the reported number of incidents is very small at 0.02% of the total of cars identified as potentially affected, they are treating the issue very seriously.

VCM says it plans to rollout a recall as soon as possible to fix the cars in question. In the mean time, owners are advised to limit charging up to 70%. Customers will be contacted once the fix is available.

VCM said other models are not affected by thr recall and not all variants EX30 are affected.

According to Malaysia’s vehicle registration data, a total of 424 EX30 EVs have been registered locally up to 31 December 2025.

The Volvo EX30 was officially launched in Malaysia in September 2024 and the locally assembled version (CKD) was introduced in January 2025.

All EX30 sold in Malaysia are equipped with a 69kWh NMC battery which provides up to 476km of WLTP-rated range for the RWD version and up to 450km for the AWD variant.

Interestingly, it was reported that Geely subsidiary, Viridi E-Mobility Technology, had recently filed a lawsuit against Sunwoda over allegedly quality defects in battery cells supplied between June 2021 and December 2023.

The lawsuit was filed following a previous issue affecting some Zeekr 001 EVs equipped with Sunwoda cells, which had to be recalled due to quality and potential fire risks concerns.
