In mid-January, OPPO’s Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer, Pete Lau, first shared an image, teasing how the OPPO Find N5 is even thinner than a regular 2B pencil when unfolded.
The OPPO Find N5 was then further compared against competitors like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, proving that it’s indeed set to be the world’s thinnest bi-foldable smartphone, measuring just 8.93mm thick when folded.
OPPO’s Product Manager, Zhou Yi Bao, revealed that OPPO aimed to make the Find N5 even thinner but was limited by the thickness of the USB-C port, which remains an essential charging solution for many consumers.
According to a report by Canalys, creating slim foldable smartphones while maintaining high-end specs—such as large, bright displays and long battery life—remains a challenge for all smartphone manufacturers. Typically, improving one aspect comes at the expense of another.
However, OPPO is leading the charge in reducing the thickness of foldable smartphones, bringing devices like the Find N5 down to the 8 to 9mm range, a significant improvement from the 15 to 17mm thickness seen in 2019.
While this is still short of the 7 to 8mm range typical of regular bar smartphones, OPPO is the closest yet, with the Find N5 measuring just 8.93mm when folded—a milestone worth recognizing. That said, OPPO’s journey to pushing the boundaries of slim, lightweight foldable smartphones is far from over.
Despite its ultra-thin profile, the OPPO Find N5 boasts a larger battery than both its predecessor and competitors, thanks to the device’s motherboard length being reduced by 31.4%, thus creating more space for a larger battery. OPPO says this is achieved through advanced PCB engineering and a streamlined layout.
Additionally, the OPPO Find N5 is the industry’s first to utilise a “3D printed titanium alloy hinge”, keeping it durable while staying stylish, and features 20 new materials across 30 key components. The device is also the world’s first foldable smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
World’s first foldable with up to IPX9 water resistance rating
Durability isn’t a term commonly associated with foldable smartphones. However, OPPO has pushed the envelope by making the Find N5 the world’s first foldable smartphone that’s rated simultaneously for IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9, making it water resistant.
50W fast wireless charging and reverse charging in a foldable
You might assume the OPPO Find N5’s ultra-thin design compromises charging speed, but that’s not the case. It supports OPPO’s 50W fast wireless charging technology and even offers reverse charging, letting you power up accessories in emergencies.
