The charging fee for Tesla Supercharger in Malaysia appears to be lower than before. When Tesla activated its first Supercharger in Malaysia at Pavilion KL in August 2023, the charging fee was set at RM1.25 per kWh and has not changed until this week with the new price reduction.

At RM1.25 per kWh, it is already much lower than the current average DC charging fee in Malaysia which is RM1.50 per kWh. Now, Tesla owners can utilise the Superchargers in Malaysia at just RM1.13 per kWh.

However, it is unclear whether this price reduction is permanent or only for a limited time. We have since sought confirmation from Tesla Malaysia regarding this matter.

Tesla Supercharger Malaysia: old fee vs new fee

Tesla never officially revealed the actual capacity of its EV batteries. However, various sources have estimated that the company is using a 57.5kWh battery pack for rear-wheel drive models.

As for the all-wheel drive models, the estimated battery capacity is 82kWh. This is except for the Performance models that are manufactured in Gigafactory Shanghai which has been fitted with a smaller 79kWh battery.

Based on those figures, here’s how much it costs to charge Tesla Model 3 and Model Y from 10% to 80% through Superchargers in Malaysia with the old and new pricing:

Tesla Supercharger Malaysia at RM1.25/kWh

  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y RWD: RM50.31
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y AWD: RM71.75
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y Performance: RM69.13

Tesla Supercharger Malaysia at RM1.13/kWh

  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y RWD: RM45.48
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y AWD: RM64.86
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y Performance: RM62.49

Hence, you are looking at savings of roughly RM5 to RM7 per charging session when you charge your Tesla from 10% to 80% at a Tesla Supercharger in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, there are no changes to the Supercharger idle fee which still remains at up to RM4 per minute. In addition to that, Tesla owners are still able to utilise all Tesla Destination Chargers in Malaysia for free.

Tesla Supercharger Malaysia vs other CPOs

At the moment, the average DC charging fee is around RM1.50 per kWh. For some Charge Point Operators (CPOs) such as ChargEV and Shell Recharge, their high-speed chargers cost slightly more.

So, here’s the general charging fee to charge a Tesla EV from 10% to 80% at high-power DC chargers operated by top CPOs in Malaysia:

DC Handal / Gentari / JomCharge high-power DC at RM1.50/kWh

  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y RWD: RM60.38
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y AWD: RM86.61
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y Performance: RM82.95

ChargEV high-power DC at RM1.60/kWh

  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y RWD: RM64.40
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y AWD: RM91.84
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y Performance: RM88.48

Shell Recharge HPC at RM2.20/kWh

  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y RWD: RM88.55
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y AWD: RM126.28
  • Tesla Model 3/Model Y Performance: RM121.66

The price differences between Tesla Supercharger and major CPOs in Malaysia could be as high as RM43 to RM61. If you find yourself using public DC chargers frequently, it is always wise to sign up for a subscription plan with certain CPOs to reduce your DC charging fee by 40% to 50%.

That being said, the Tesla Supercharger is still not available for non-Tesla EVs. While the government has asked Tesla to open up at least 15 of its Superchargers to other users, the company still has until the end of 2025 to fulfil this requirement.
