In a groundbreaking initiative, CIMB Bank Berhad and CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad have introduced Malaysia’s first Visa debit card dedicated to supporting children with cerebral palsy. The launch, held at CIMB’s Plaza Damansara branch, signifies the bank’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society while championing impactful social causes.
The launch event featured esteemed guests, including YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports, who officiated the event alongside key representatives from CIMB and Gabungan Anak-Anak Palsi Serebrum (GAPS).
“This initiative not only raises awareness about cerebral palsy but also inspires collective action towards building a more compassionate society,” said YB Hannah Yeoh. Paralympic athlete Mohammad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi also joined the event, adding inspiration to the occasion.
Understanding Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy, a neurological condition caused by brain damage during or after birth, affects movement, posture, and motor skills. Families caring for children with cerebral palsy face significant challenges, particularly those from the B40 income group. These challenges include the cost of specialized healthcare, education, and rehabilitation equipment.
Rafidah Rafizah Ahmad, President and Founder of GAPS, emphasized the critical role of support systems by saying, “More than 81% of families caring for children with cerebral palsy are in the B40 group. CIMB’s support through this initiative will help alleviate financial burdens and empower these children to reach their full potential.”
The CIMB Visa Debit Card: A Card with a Purpose
At the heart of this initiative is the new CIMB Visa debit card which is designed for a good cause. For every card issued, CIMB will contribute RM2 to GAPS, providing sustainable funding for rehabilitation equipment and enrichment programs for children with cerebral palsy.
The card also highlights CIMB’s commitment to sustainability by being made from recycled PVC materials. This eco-conscious choice reflects the bank’s broader goals of minimizing environmental impact through sustainable product design.
“Our mission is to drive financial growth while supporting meaningful social causes. This partnership with GAPS reinforces our belief that change begins at the community level,” said Effendy Shahul Hamid, CEO of CIMB Group Consumer and Digital Banking.
CIMB Community Hub: A Space for Collaboration
As part of the launch, CIMB unveiled its first Community Hub at Plaza Damansara. Designed as a collaborative space, the hub brings together NGOs, customers, and communities to address urgent social needs.
Effendy added, “The Community Hub allows us to deepen our engagement with the public, fostering sustainable solutions that empower underserved groups.” The hub serves as a model for future expansions, inspiring Malaysians to come together and actively support community-driven initiatives.
