Tesla charging infrastructure in Malaysia has now included Penang as one of its key locations. The company today has officially revealed two new Destination Charging locations in the state.

It is not known whether this was a conscious decision or just pure coincidence, there is one Destination Charging location for both sides of Penang. On the island side, it is located at the All Seasons Place in Ayer Itam of George Town and features 4 charging bays.

On the Seberang Perai side, 8 charging bays have been set up at The Ship Campus, located at Batu Kawan. With the addition of these two spots, the number of Tesla Destination Charging locations in Malaysia has now increased to 8 which also include Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Pavilion Damansara Heights, Sunway Putra Mall, Sunway Velocity Mall, Sunway Bigbox Iskandar Puteri, and Freeport A’Famosa Melaka.

What is Tesla Destination Charging?

For those who are not familiar with Tesla Destination Charging, it is essentially a charging location that offers AC charging for Tesla EVs. It utilises the same Tesla Wall Connector that the company offers consumers for home charging.

Technically, the Wall Connector is capable of delivering 22kW but the onboard AC charger on two Tesla offerings that are currently available in Malaysia including Model 3 and Model Y maxed out at 11kW. Given the slower charging speed as opposed to a Tesla Supercharger which can go up to 250kW, a Destination Charging location is suitable for those who plan to spend an extensive time there.

At the moment, all Tesla Destination Charging facilities in Malaysia are exclusive to Tesla EVs and are available for free.
