Apple iPhone 15 and BMW wireless chargers are not compatible currently. Here’s why

It has been less than a month since the launch of the Apple iPhone 15, and yet another problem has arisen for the new owners. This time, it is related to wireless charging. Based on reports in the MacRumors forums as well as on X, formerly known as Twitter, users are sharing complaints that their brand-new phones are now broken.

The culprit this time is the wireless Qi charging tray in the recent model BMWs – the pads will force the iPhones into data recovery mode (white screen), reboots, and once the boot is complete, the NFC chip in the phone will no longer function for payments.

The NFC chip in the iPhone controls features such as Apple Pay and digital car keys, which BMW supports with iPhones.  According to MacRumors, affected users will see the prompt ‘Could Not Set Up Apple Pay’ after the reboot.

Qi charging is available as an option for multiple models in Malaysia – including the EV variants. Malaysian BMW also supports digital car keys – for both iOS and Android devices via the BMW app.

The problem is severe enough that users reported needing to replace their phones as this is a hardware problem, not a software problem. Thus far there are no permanent solutions to the problem.

The problem is also affecting the whole iPhone 15 lineup – from the standard model all the way to the Pro Max. Owners of BMW with iPhone 15 are to proceed with caution until the issue is sorted by Apple, BMW or both.
