Proton has discovered an issue with the grounding connection within the Proton X90 SUV. Hence, all Proton X90 owners are now being asked to bring their vehicles for inspection at Proton 3S and 4S service centres.

According to the statement on the automaker’s Facebook page and official website, the issue was identified by product experts from Proton and Geely who were involved in the investigation of the X90 fire incident that happened last month. This issue may cause a large current to continuously pass through the connecting area which could then lead to overheating.

Given the proximity of the connecting area to the soundproofing material, the overheating area may trigger a thermal incident. In the statement, Proton once again highlighted that the 48V lithium-ion battery within the X90’s Electric Motor Synergy (EMS) hybrid system was not the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the automaker said that Proton 3S and 4S dealers will individually contact all Proton X90 owners to inform them about the issue and schedule a safety inspection appointment. The service centre will then rectify the issue if required which seems to indicate that this is not a widespread issue and the safety inspection is likely being done as a precautionary measure.

Launched back in May, the Proton X90 is the brand’s first hybrid model. The SUV proved to be quite a popular model with 2,944 units have been sold as of last month but in case you missed the big announcement back in May, check out our initial take on the Proton X90 right here:
