BYD’s journey in Malaysia has progressed to a new stage with the opening of new facilities in Penang and Johor. As you can tell from their locations, these new BYD Centres are generally meant to serve the Northern and Southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia.

Part of the expansion is two new showrooms which do not sound anything out of the ordinary at first. That is until you consider that both of these new BYD showrooms are located inside shopping malls – the Gurney Plaza in Penang and Mid Valley Southkey in Johor Bahru.

While it might be a rare sight in Malaysia at the moment, seeing an electric vehicle showroom inside a shopping mall is becoming a norm in matured EV markets such as Singapore, China, and the United States. After all, many consumers already started to see EVs as lifestyle products.

Just like the previous BYD showrooms at Ara Damansara and TREC, both of these new BYD establishments are under the purview of BYD Sime Darby Beyond Auto. In addition to that, the company has also opened BYD Service Centres in Sungai Pinang and Skudai to provide aftersales services.

The Atto 3 is currently the most popular EV in Malaysia with more than 1,000 units have been sold since it was launched in our market last December. Priced at RM150,430 not inclusive of insurance, the EV’s Standard Range which has a 49.92kWh battery pack provides a driving range of 410km according to the NEDC standards.

On the other hand, the Atto 3 Extended Range with a 60.48kWh battery has a slightly higher driving range of 480km alongside a price tag of RM168,430. Regardless of the variant, both of them have been equipped with a 150kW (203hp) electric motor that can deliver 310Nm of torque and allows the Atto 3 to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

In case you have yet to meet the highly popular EV, then you might want to check out our take on the Atto 3 right here.
