Sony Xperia 1 V launching on 11 May, promises next-gen imaging with next-gen sensor

In case you’ve forgotten, Sony still makes smartphones and they are about to launch the Sony Xperia 1 V next month. This is essentially the Mark V of the flagship Xperia 1 series which is likely to run on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and boasts improved imaging with technology from its Sony Alpha series.

The official Sony Xperia 1 V launch is on 11th May 2023 at 13:00 Japan time, which is at 12:00pm in Malaysia. You can watch the announcement event live on their official YouTube channel.

According to the teaser, the “Next ONE” will feature next-gen sensors and next-gen imaging. No further details have been provided for its upcoming camera setup but we won’t be surprised if the Japanese smartphone maker is putting a large 1″ image sensor or introduce a new breakthrough like last year’s 85-125mm telephoto zoom lens which claims to be the world’s first true optical zoom lens.

Based on leaked renders, the Xperia 1 V will share the same tall and boxy candy bar design with a traditional vertically aligned triple-camera array. Being a flagship Xperia device, you can expect it to retain IP68-rated dust and water resistance as well as a dedicated camera shutter button.

Over the past few years, Sony has become a very niche smartphone player and it doesn’t help that its Xperia 1 series are often priced higher than its direct smartphone competitors such as Apple and Samsung. To recap, last year’s Sony Xperia 1 IV with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage was priced at RM6,099 in Malaysia, while the previous Xperia 1 III was priced at RM5,799. As usual, we can expect Sony Malaysia will throw in free wireless ANC headphones during the early preorder period.
