Samsung Malaysia has recently announced that the Galaxy Watch 5 series can now support electrocardiogram (ECG) tracking and blood pressure monitoring after obtaining the necessary approvals from Malaysia’s Medical Device Authority. For those who are using the older Galaxy Watch 3 and Watch 4 series, Samsung Malaysia has confirmed that the feature will be coming very soon.

To recap, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 series and above have the necessary sensors for ECG and blood pressure monitoring, however, the features were disabled in Malaysia at the time of launch. According to Samsung Malaysia, these features will be enabled through a software update and the Galaxy Watch 4 is expected to receive it sometime in Q2 2023, followed by the Galaxy Watch 3 at a later time.

To recap, the blood pressure monitoring on the Galaxy Watches uses the Photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor and it requires manual calibration with a cuff-based blood pressure monitor. To get an accurate reading, you’ll need to measure 3 times within 3 days to complete the calibration and repeat the calibration again every 28 days.

The Samsung Health Monitor app will display and record your Systolic blood pressure (BP), Diastolic blood pressure (BP) and Pulse (heart rate) when the measurement is successful. The app has been registered under the Medical Device Authority register and it is valid until 2027. You can learn more about the ECG and Blood Pressure monitoring feature in our previous post.
