Google is expanding its wearable line of products and the search giant is partnering with LG to produce its first smartwatch according to a source familiar with the project.

Speaking to CNET, the insider also revealed that Google is working on an operating system specifically designed for smartwatches and that details of this smartwatch-centric OS will be revealed in March while the actual Googl smartwatch will make it’s debut in June at Google’s I/O global developer conference.

LG has so far proven to be a very capable device manufacturer for Google with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 getting a lot of positive comments from users and experts alike but when it comes to wearables, LG like many of its competitors are venturing into unfamiliar waters and it will be interesting to see what the Korean company will come up with.

In any case the wearable market is going to be a busy one this year with almost every major manufacturer eyeing a piece of a lucrative new pie that is estimated to be US$19 billion by 2018. Reports suggest that Apple too is looking to tap into this new market, the company is expected to reveal its own smartwatch later this year. At the end of the day it’s going to be an interesting year for wearables and consumers like you and us will be spoiled for choice.
