The Apple TV 4K is actually a neat and sleek TV box by Apple, and it’s meant to work by itself as a regular TV box—a vessel for your regular entertainment including Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and other apps. But after a recent software update, tvOS expects users to have access to an iPhone or iPad to continue accessing it.
Twitter user @hugelgupf reported the problem yesterday, on 16 January 2023. According to them, they do not own a single Apple device, but they own an Apple TV. However, every time they start the Apple TV, they get a prompt that states that agreeing to a new Terms and Conditions would require a device running iOS 16 or later, or iPadOS 16 or later.
“What do you expect me to do about this?” asked the Apple TV owner to Apple.
Usually, the Apple TV 4K can be used without needing access to other Apple hardware. You can set the tv box up from scratch completely, install apps, and make purchases without another Apple device—although it does make it a lot easier if you have one.
Apple TV’s new update will only allow users to use an iOS device to read the new Terms and Conditions rather than read it on the television itself. Additionally, the minimum OS requirement means that someone with an old-generation iPad, for example, would also not be able to continue enjoying the tv box.
The newest version of the Apple TV 4K starts at RM699 for the 64GB WiFi version. It’s at least RM150 cheaper than the previous version of the tv box, and I couldn’t find a downside to it initially. Now with the new update, it starts to make a little more sense as to why Apple didn’t mind bringing the price down.
