MYNIC, the agency under the Ministry of Communications and Digital, which handles .MY domains (e.g. yourname.com.my) have announced a revision to their domain name policy which will be effective in stages in 2023. Users will be able to renew their .MY domain name for up to a decade and there’s now a longer renewal grace period after a domain name has expired.

According to MYNIC, these changes were made after careful consideration and a thorough review of global standards. The latest revision allows users to register or renew their .MY domain name for up to a maximum of 10 years, which is double the previous limit of just 5 years. MYNIC says the move will provide domain name owners with a worry-free experience knowing that their digital asset is safe for the next decade.

To keep up with global standards, MYNIC has also revised its renewal grace period and suspension policy for expired domain names. If a .MY domain is expired, domain owners are now given a 45 days renewal grace period, which is 15 days more than before.

After that, MYNIC provides an extra Redemption Grace Period of 30 days, where you can still renew but with an additional fee. Once the Renewal and Redemption Grace Periods have lapsed, the domain will go into a pending delete phase for 5 days before it is deleted and returned to the public market.

Domain owners are still advised to renew their domain names early as they will be suspended upon expiry. MYNIC says the new .MY domain name lifecycle will also apply to .MY Premium Domain Names.

If you’re interested in buying a com.my, .net.my, .edu.my, .gov.my, .org.my, .mil.my or .biz.my domain, it costs RM80 per year, while the shorter .my domain costs RM120 per year. For individual and personal use, MYNIC offers .name.my for RM32 per year. Take note that each domain categories have its own supporting document requirements, so not everyone can register a .gov.my or .edu.my domain name.
