After the launch of the region’s first 350kW public EV charger in X Park Sunway Serene, Gentari has officially launched its new EV charging hub located at Bangi Golf Resort. This is also the first EV charging site in Malaysia to feature Kempower’s charging solution with dynamic power sharing.
Similar to the X Park Sunway Serene site, the Bangi Golf Resort charging hub has also received the Energy Commission’s Electric Vehicle Charging System (EVCS) licence. Besides setting minimum standards and requirements for public EV charging infrastructure, the licence also allows the EV operator to charge EV charging based on kWh instead of parking time.
As explained previously, kWh-based pricing provides an equitable and fairer way to pay for EV charging. Essentially, EV users will pay for exactly how much electricity is consumed rather than the time occupying the charging station. This makes more sense for EVs with lower maximum DC charging input such as the Ora Good Cat that can support up to 60kW DC charging and the BYD Atto 3 that could only accept up to 80kW for the extended range model.
The biggest highlight of the Bangi Golf Resort charging hub is the Kempower charging solution. It has a total of four nozzles from 3 satellites that are connected to a cabinet which provides a total output of 200kW. Take note that 200kW is the total capacity that’s shared for the entire system and each nozzle can only push up to 120kW max. At any one time, the system will reserve a minimum of 20kW for the final available nozzle. In theory, if four vehicles are connected, you might see a combination of 100kW + 50kW + 30kW + 20kW, subject to the current state of charge as well as the maximum input of each vehicle.
Unlike typical DC chargers which have a huge cabinet, the Kempower charging satellites are much slimmer and it comes with a spring mechanism for easy cable management. As shown above, the charging cable is flexible enough to reach another charging bay and the weight is partially supported by the spring mechanism.
The Kempower satellite’s touchscreen display also provides extra details about your charging session. This includes a graph of your charging curve and you can view the progress of your charge remotely by scanning a QR code with your phone.
Besides the Kempower EV charger, this charging hub also has 120kW DC chargers as well as 22kW and 7kW AC chargers. According to Gentari, these chargers share the same kWh pricing as the X Park Sunway Serene charging hub. DC charging is priced at RM1.00 per kWh while AC charging is priced at RM0.55 per kWh during its current promotional period. You can activate the chargers via Setel or the JomCharge app.
We got 18% to 90% charge in 42 minutes with 59.79kWh transferred. That’s RM59.79 based on RM1 per kWh rate. pic.twitter.com/yOdSvUH3Ia

During today’s event, we managed to charge a Kia EV6 from 18-90% in 42 minutes with a total of 59.79kWh utilised. The charging session would cost RM59.79 based on the RM1.00 per kWh rate.
