This smart TV on a stick is ridiculous, but I kinda want it

Okay, hear me out. At first glance, this product seems as ridiculous as the Asus veggie cleaner, but I think I’m into it. Meet the LG StanbyME: a portable smart TV on a stand. The product was originally unveiled in Korea back in July, but it’s now globally announced in anticipation of CES 2022.

Specs and features

The display itself isn’t incredibly impressive. It’s a 27-inch FHD LED screen with sizeable bezels. The display is usable in both landscape and portrait mode, and you can roll it with its hidden wheels or you can take the whole screen out and use it as a big tablet. It can also be tilted 65 degrees both backward and forward to give users a better viewing experience.

Although the TV has been showcased with touchscreen capabilities in every promotional context, an LG representative told Gizmodo that it does not have touchscreen capabilities. This is most likely a mistake that PR made with Gizmodo, but it would be super disappointing if it was true.

Including the stand, the whole thing weighs about 17.5 kg. It can be plugged into the wall, or you can use it unplugged for up to 3 hours with its rechargeable battery.

In terms of features, the StanbyME has the usual smart TV apps like Netflix and YouTube and you can even wirelessly mirror your Android phone with NFC. AirPlay support for iOS will be supported with a future software update. As for connectivity, there is a USB port and one HDMI port.

As soon as I saw the yoga scene in the promo video, I thought “Wow, this isn’t a bad idea’. Whether it be in front of your desk or next to a sofa, the portability of this display could be quite useful.

You can also attach your phone to the device using a removable cradle if you want to record videos or have video calls with the large display.

Although, I find it hilarious that the video featured a lot of animals because dogs would probably knock this over right away.

It’s currently priced in Korea at KRW 1,040,000, which is about RM3,698. There is no word yet on global availability, but we expect to see it at CES 2022 in January.
