Garmin Malaysia has just announced the Garmin Venu Sq, along with the Venu Sq Music Edition for the Malaysian market, building upon the “lifestyle series” that is the Garmin Venu series.

In addition to Garmin’s suite of health monitoring and fitness tracking features, the Garmin Venu Sq features—as indicated by its name—a new square-ish face design. Meanwhile, you also get offline music playback functionality for the Venu Sq Music Edition.

Sound good? Here’s everything you need to know—and more.

Price and availability

Both the Garmin Venu Sq and the Venu Sq Music Edition are now available on Lazada, Shopee, the AECO Online Shop, and authorised Garmin retailers. For the Venu Sq, you can choose between orchid/metallic orchid, white/light gold, and shadow gray/slate. Meanwhile, colour options for the Venu Sq Music Edition are made up of light sand/rose gold, navy/light gold, moss/slate, and black/slate.

Pricing starts at RM999, and customers who purchase a Venu Sq will receive a limited-edition batik watch band, a collaborative design with Malaysian designer Seza Zulkeple (while stocks last).

Official pricing is as follows:

Garmin Venu Sq – RM999
Garmin Venu Sq Music Edition – RM1,250

Meanwhile, Garmin is running a week-long roadshow from the 28th of September till the 4th of October 2020 at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. The event will run from 10am till 10pm.

Specs

The Garmin Venu Sq, just like the standard Venu, utilises a LCD touchscreen (1.3″), as opposed to the transflective Memory-in-Pixel (MIP) displays that many of the company’s fitness-focused models use. The watchface is also protected with Corning Gorilla Glass, too, and is surrounded by an aluminium bezel and a silicone band that should offer a reasonable amount of comfort.

Battery life is identical for both models, with six days of battery life in smartwatch mode promised by Garmin. With GPS turned on, you’ll get up to 14 hours of usage on a single charge, and if music playback is included on the Music Edition, you get up to six hours of usage.

As mentioned, the Garmin Venu Sq also supports most of the company’s highly-lauded range of fitness and health features. These include the 24/7 ElevateTM heart rate monitoring, Pulse Ox2, menstrual and stress taracking, along with the Body Battery features—which gives users an idea on their energy levels.

More than 20 indoor and outdoor sports apps are supported, including swimming modes. 5ATM water resistance means that submersion in up to 50 metres of water is possible, so you’ll be able to take the Venu Sq with you while swimming.

GPS, NFC, and SpO2 functionality is also supported, while the Music Edition comes with onboard storage that should be enough for 500 songs (Garmin hasn’t specified the actual storage capacity for now). This means that with supported music streaming services such as Deezer and Spotify, you can download tracks/playlists onto the Venu Sq Music Edition for offline playback later—without needing to have a smartphone nearby.

The rest of the features are pretty standard. Notifications, Incident detection, and personalisation options are available, with the Garmin Connect app available on both iOS and Android.
