This morning, several media outlets that had the opportunity to review the Samsung Galaxy Fold had reported serious problems with its Infinity Flex display. A couple of units are facing display issues rendering the device unusable. Samsung is aware of the problem and they have issued a response on the matter.

Below is the statement that was released to The Verge:

A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.

Several review units were apparently delivered without a warning message about the “screen protector“. MKBHD and Bloomberg had removed this top protective layer and that’s when the problem had started to appear.

However, for The Verge, they claimed that they have used the device normally. However, it appears that their unit is facing a different issue. It was mentioned that they noticed a concentrated bulge in the middle of the display as if there was something stuck in between the flexible display and the sophisticated hinge.

It isn’t clear if these units are the same as the retail products that are going out to pre-order customers. The Galaxy Fold retails for US$1,980 (about RM8,189) and it will be launched in Malaysia on the first week of May.
